It was only a year ago that I was the one behind the table presenting my work to random strangers, may it be a curious passerby or a technology director of a big name web design company. But this year, it was my turn to observe the students’ work.

The NMPD Showcase is an event where students from the NMPD program at SAIT are able to show off their creative skills and technical work that they have done throughout the two year program. I’ll admit, there were some pretty impressive work being shown.
Not only are the students there to show off their talents, but also looking for possible opportunities to work in the industry. It’s also a feeding ground for headhunters. This year they actually spanned out the showcase over two days where students had a choice of which day to go if not both days. Unlike previous years, all the students are cramped into such a tight little room, enough that you’d be bumping each others mouses. This year, there was enough room to actually breath.
Unfortunately, Torin, a technology director at Critical Mass, beat me to the punch and had already had an armful of resumes and portfolios by the time I got there. Nevertheless, I slowly made my way across the room flipping through print portfolios, right clicking and checking out the source codes of websites, grabbing a handful of sweets (which I’m sure students put them there for bribes), while munching on my cheese stick. Straight from my mouth, some of those students sure have some pretty awesome talents.
Here are a few students that I manged to chat with, and some to impress me with their work. (Alphabetical order)
Aaron Dryden
Adam Moore
Aleksandra Milanovic
Anjeev Sidhu
Carrie Gilkison
Charles Torrealba
Colin Sproule
Corey Myke
Diana Khabibullina
Haley Steel
Helen Carolino
Jeff Rendek
King Rosales
Ryan Alim
Trudy Lui
Umer Tahir
Victoria Cosens
Overall, great mix of talents (more creative than technical though) and tons of potential in all of the students. Hopefully they’ll soon all be out there in the industry taking on new challenges and experiencing the multimedia industry like never before.
Oh and PS. Those chocolates aren’t good enough to bribe me. Maybe next time try a nice cold one ;D
