Yup…I tried it even though my gut said not to do it.
Oh well. That teaches me for not doing my homework first. I was currently running K2 0.9.5 with the previous version of Wordpress which I can’t remember. Fantastico takes care of the Wordpress versions for me. But unfortunately, it’s not quite compatible with my K2 theme. I currently cannot download the most recent K2 version, 0.9.6 (which I believe would fix most of my problems) because their download section is down. So…for the mean time, I’ve rolled back to the default theme for Wordpress until I’m able to fix the problem(s).
So everything now is up and running again with a few minor exceptions that I’ll take care of later. For those who are stuck in the same situation as me, feel free to follow the following steps I took to get myself up and running again. (Steps may vary to get your own WordPress blog up and running)
- Step 1:
BACK UP YOUR STUFF!! I can’t stress it anymore but trust me, you’ll want to do this just in case you mess up and need to revert back quickly. To be on the safe side, I backed up my entire WordPress folder and stored it somewhere safe. Unlike my previous experience… - Step 2:
Go ahead and download the new WordPress 2.2 and K2 0.9.6 if you haven’t done so already. As I mentioned before, the K2 download site was down at the time I needed to download the new theme. No worries, they still have it as a cached page on Google. - Step 3:
Before upgrading, you’ll want to revert back to that default blue theme of WordPress and deactivate your plugins. - Step 4:
Go ahead and follow the steps for upgrading WordPress 2.2. - Step 5:
Once you’ve verified that WordPress 2.2 is running like a clean whistle, you can go ahead and shove in your K2 0.9.6 files into your theme folder. Be aware that you’ll be overwriting files. If you’ve modified any of the files, keep a note on what was modified (CSS file for me). - Step 6:
Once that’s done, go ahead and switched to your new K2 0.9.6 theme. If everything goes according to plan, you should see no errors being spat out. But just in case you do, feel free to check out the K2 forum for answers (unfortunately mine worked out fine the first time so I can’t guide you through any errors). - Step 7:
Reactivate your plugins and you should be good to go.
When I received a notification that there was a new version of WordPress out, I didn’t bother if my current theme was compatible with the new version. Just before I was going to hit the upgrade button in my Fantastico, I had a feeling something bad was going to go wrong, but if I had that feeling why the heck did I go ahead and hit that button anyways?
Well, I knew the potential danger and I knew what the proper procedures were. But I really was interested how I would react and what I would do in such a catastrophe. Really, I did. I had this in my mind as I press the update button. If I couldn’t save my own blog from an update meltdown, I sure won’t prepared for the unexpected. So really, this was not just to update my WordPress blog to the latest version, but a little test to keep me on the balls of my feet. I felt I handled this situation in a fairly timed manner without any heart stopping panics like last time. I was able to save my blog from my own undoing. But come on…what else is there to do on a Tuesday night?
On that note, I’ve also noticed a few changes in this version of WordPress, one of them ticking me off pretty bad. They’ve taken out the preview post feature. I’m sure a lot of people use that. It’s been replaced with a link that opens up a new page with your preview on it. Definitely not in my favor. I’ve found a plugin that will handle that. Despite of that, I haven’t take enough time to go through and see what has been changed for these versions of WordPress and K2.
